Webex

Installing Webex

Desktop, mobile, tablet. Sign in and make a first call.

The short answer

Download: webex.com/downloads on a computer, the App Store or Google Play on a phone.
Sign in: With the Apps Login from your welcome email. Same login on every device.
Password: It stays as it was sent. Nothing on your side changes it.
One computer: Phone service signs into one computer at a time.

Webex is the app. It is the only calling app Vocatech supports. Desktop for your main work computer, mobile for your phone, tablet if you want it. All three sign in with the same login.

Your sign-in details came in an email from Vocatech Support with a subject beginning Welcome to Vocatech. If you cannot find it, check Spam and Promotions, then ask us. We can resend it from your extension, and the resend comes with a new password.

Download

On a computer, go to webex.com/downloads and pick Windows or Mac. On a phone or tablet, open the App Store on iOS or Google Play on Android and search for Webex. The publisher is Cisco.

Do not install a trial from a marketing page, and do not sign up for a free Webex account with your work email. The main Webex app is the right one, and it recognizes your Vocatech account once you sign in.

  1. Open Webex.
  2. Enter the email address on your welcome email. It usually matches your business email.
  3. Enter the password from the same email. There is nothing to set or change on your side: it stays the same until we resend the email with a new one, so keep that email somewhere you trust.
  4. If your company signs in with Google or Microsoft, there is no password: pick that button and use your work account.

The first sign-in takes about a minute while Webex pulls down your extension, voicemail, and call history.

Allow the microphone

On first launch, your operating system asks for microphone and camera access. Allow both. Without the microphone, Webex cannot place a call. If you clicked Deny by accident, fix it in System Settings on a Mac or Privacy and security on Windows: find Webex in the microphone list and turn it on.

Make a test call

Open the dial pad and call your own cell phone. Talk for a few seconds, then end the call. If it rings through and sounds clean on both ends, you are done. If it does not connect, check that your internet works and that no VPN or content filter is blocking Webex, then call us.

Phone and tablet

Sign into the same account on your phone. Calls ring your computer and your phone together; most people leave it that way so they never miss a call. Allow notifications when the app asks: without them, the phone cannot wake the app for an incoming call while it is in the background. If the cell still does not ring reliably, the durable fix is Office Anywhere, which rings your cell number itself.

Two computers

The phone service side of Webex signs into one computer at a time. Signing in on a second computer, including a remote desktop machine, takes the calling line from the first, and the two copies then take it from each other. Phones and tablets do not do this; only computers. Sign out of the copy you are not using.

Chromebooks

Webex on a Chromebook gives messaging and meetings only. It does not make or take calls on a Vocatech extension, whether opened in the browser or installed from the Play Store. Someone whose only computer is a Chromebook uses a desk phone, Office Anywhere, or both.

When Webex says a new version is required

Cisco retires old builds of the app on a schedule. The fix is a fresh copy from webex.com/downloads and the same sign-in. See Webex problems and what fixes them.
