Shared Call Appearance (SCA) lets one extension ring on multiple phones. When a call comes in, all of them ring. Whichever answers first picks it up. The others stop ringing.
This is how people put a phone at the office and a phone at home on the same extension. Same number, same voicemail, same everything, two physical devices.
How SCA works
An extension on Vocatech can have up to three devices attached to it. Any combination of Poly desk phones at different locations. The Webex app on desktop, mobile, and tablet is separate and does not count toward the three.
Every device registered to the extension sees the same state. If one phone puts a call on hold, the other can pick it up. If one phone has a voicemail light on, all of them do.
The three-phone cap
Maximum three Polys per extension. This is a firm company policy, not a technical limit.
More than that tends to create ring chaos (five phones blasting when someone calls) and makes provisioning fragile. Three is enough for almost every real scenario. If you think you need more, what you actually want is probably a hunt group.
Use cases that make sense
- Office plus home office. One phone on the desk at work, a second on the desk at home. Same extension, same calls ring both.
- Front desk plus back office. Receptionist at the front desk, same extension on the owner's desk in back so calls can be picked up from either spot.
- Shop floor plus manager office. One phone near the point of sale, a second phone in the manager's office so the owner can grab a call without walking out.
These all share one characteristic: one person, two places, one number. That is SCA.
How to add a phone
Adding a second or third phone to an existing extension is not self-service. Contact support with the MAC address of the new phone and which extension it should share. We provision it and ship it, or you plug in a phone you already own.
When we add the phone, your existing phone does not stop working. Both register, both start ringing on the next incoming call.
One extension. Up to three Polys. Plus Webex on every device you own. That is enough.
